The spirit of collaboration is healthy across the optical professions – but it should get stronger still, says the President of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians.
Throughout my career as a dispensing optician (DO), I have worked alongside optometrists, ophthalmologists, ophthalmic medical practitioners, contact lens opticians (CLOs), and trainees of all sorts.
Rarely have I witnessed in practice any level of professional antagonism – it would appear that we all work collaboratively and in harmony! Indeed, we have to be mutually supportive. We all have slightly different skill sets – and recognizing this and making sure the right person does the right job is essential to the efficient running of an optical practice.
Sometimes we may disagree with colleagues, but we can learn from each other this way. We may end up changing our minds or agreeing to differ, but healthy discussion will not erode these relationships.
Looking forward, I see DOs, CLOs, optometrists, and ophthalmologists continuing to strengthen their working collaboration. The next 12 months will see an unprecedented increase in inter-professional training in optometry and dispensing/contact lens optics, with more CPD training being undertaken by all types of practitioners, some specialist workshops open to all professionals, and the further development of a mutual support network, where members respect each others’ skill sets, recognize limitations, and offer guidance and advice.
In my capacity as ABDO President, I meet CEOs, presidents, and heads of other professional bodies. At the heart of our motivation – the reason we do the jobs we do – is the patient. As such, we can all agree on what a good outcome looks like.
We must keep the patient at the forefront of all our decisions, offering them a better, more efficient service. At the same time, the development of our professions will be enhanced with mutual and interdisciplinary training. In this way, we will be truly working as a team and making the most of every member’s skills.
