World Sight Day photos shine a light on a “global blind spot”
The image above – “Eye Screening at Jukwa, Ghana” – shows an eye nurse checking visual acuity in the community – and it netted the top prize in the professional category at this year’s World Sight Day photo competition. The photo “encompasses the broader reach of eye health services to remote parts of the world,” said Artists with Disabilities advocate, Imraan Gallo, one of a panel of seven judging the competition. “I’d put this image on the cover of a magazine because it truly represents that we should strive to provide these services to all,” he added.
Laila Tuiloma’s “Refraction” (above) won the competition’s amateur category. It shows a dentist in the Marshall Islands being tested in a storage room used for COVID-19 supplies, highlighting how health professionals in this part of the world are battling such basic barriers as a lack of space and facilities.
Judge Caroline Casey, IAPB President, praised the winning images for displaying and celebrating the impact of eye care and making visible an issue that is “a global blind spot.”
Not all the World Sight Day photos have to capture eye care in action, however. The striking image below, a reflection of a footbridge at the palace complex in Beijing’s Forbidden City, was a runner-up in the amateur category. Shot by David Curtis, the perfect eye shape makes it look “as if the rulers of old are watching the modern day tourists.”
