From a new visual field analyzer to the expansion of the Dutch optical trade show, BOLD, here’s a glance at the eye care news stories that caught our attention recently
Lens leaders. BCLA members can now nominate their peers for two of the association’s most coveted honors – the 2025 Irving Fatt Memorial Lecture and the BCLA Medal. The latter is awarded to an individual at the biennial BCLA Clinical Conference and Exhibition and recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of contact lenses and/or anterior eye. Visual field analyzer. Ophthalmic lens experts HOYA Vision Care has joined forces with med-tech specialists Oculera to introduce a new virtual reality (VR) technology. From September 1, 2024, HOYA customers will have access to “the only VR headset visual field analyser available in the UK and Ireland.” HOYA reports that the Oculera Visual Field Analyser uses state-of-the-art technology to detect and diagnose early glaucoma, AMD, scotomas or brain abnormalities.” The device promises to “revolutionize the patient experience with its easy-to-use, low maintenance and portable design,” the company adds. Bigger and BOLDer. Dutch trade show BOLD Optical is expanding in size this year. BOLD XXL will be held at De Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, The Netherlands, September 8–9, featuring 360 brands and 147 exhibitors. According to ABDO, the De Brabanthallen hall space spans more than 9,000 sq m, “ensuring ample space for stands and eliminating the heat issues reported last year.” Link
RNIB calls for accessible voting. RNIB campaigners and the charity’s chair, Anna Tylor, have delivered an open letter to Downing Street calling on the Prime Minister to make accessible voting a reality for blind and partially sighted people. Link
GOC seeks nine Committee members. The General Optical Council is seeking to appoint nine new Committee members across its Education, Registration and Standards committees. Education requires one dispensing optician (DO) and two optometrists; Registration has openings for two DOs and one optometrist, and for Standards, one DO and two optometrists. Link
Collaborative Eye Care Award. The New Optometrist is seeking entries for this year’s Collaborative Eye Care Award (CECA). CECA recognizes and rewards projects that are closing the gap between optometry and ophthalmology to drive real change in the eye care space. Are you or your colleagues involved in a project that is similarly looking to find new ways of sharing data and information? Perhaps you are aiming to improve patient outcomes in primary care, establish a new reimbursement model, or help change the professional mindset and bring optometrists and ophthalmologists closer together.
