A glance at the eye care news stories that caught our attention this week
Dry eye expert for BCLA. Sarah Farrant, an international expert in therapeutics and dry eye management, is confirmed as new President of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA), succeeding the outgoing Rakesh Kapoor. Farrant represents the UK as an Ambassador for the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), previously sat on the council for the College of Optometrists for 12 years, and served as chair of the Somerset Local Optical Committee. New spokes on the Dry Eye Wheel. The World Council of Optometry (WCO) and vision care company Alcon are extending their education initiative to advance global, evidence-based dry eye disease education. The partners have updated the WCO Alcon Dry Eye Wheel to raise optometrists’ understanding of dry eye disease diagnosis and practical management. The tool now includes content surrounding diet and dietary supplements, in-office and complex treatments, and “multifaceted, evidence-based knowledge that can be used in nearly all eye care environments.” Link
Medal, medal. The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (WCSM) is keen to receive more submissions for The Ruskell Medal and The Master’s Medal for 2024, in respect of research published between June 30, 2023 and August 1, 2024. The Master’s Medal is for people in the very first stages of their research career, while The Ruskell Medal invites applicants with up to seven years’ postdoctoral experience. Entries are also invited for the WCSM Bronze and Silver Medals. The Ruskell and Master’s Medals will be awarded at the WCSM’s Court Lunch in Apothecaries’ Hall in London on Wednesday October 2, 2024.
Optegra–Zeiss Symposium. Registration is now open for the CPD-accredited Optegra and Zeiss Symposium 2024 on Saturday 6 July at Conference Aston in Birmingham. The event is billed as “an interactive experience exploring the latest advancements in surgical techniques, diagnostic tools and patient care.” Registrations close on June 21. Link
